Prof. R. L. Sharma, the present Vice Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh Technical University, Hamirpur, is a renowned educationist, scientist and administrator. In a career of more than three decades, Prof. Sharma has established a reputation as a tireless academician, scientist and administrator. Besides, he has been recognised as one of the most authoritative voices in the area of Computational Fluid Dynamics.
Prof. Sharma obtained his B.E. in Civil Engineering from Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology Patiala (Now Thapar University) in 1978. Subsequently, he obtained his M.Tech in Hydraulics and Water Resources from IIT Kanpur in 1980 and Ph.D. degree from the same prestigious institute in 1983. Prof. Sharma started his career as a lecturer in 1983 from Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala.
Later, he joined NIT Hamirpur as assistant professor in 1986 and became Professor in 1994. During his service at NIT Hamirpur, he served in several positions and has completed numerous assignments successfully. He was reputed for the timely and efficiently implementing the Technical Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP) at the institute. He also served as Director NIT Hamirpur from Nov. 2010 to Oct. 2011.
Professor Sharma was also actively engaged in teaching and research at NIT Hamirpur. His research interests include – Finite Element Method and Computational Fluid Dynamics. He has a number of research papers and articles in reputed national and international journals and conferences. Prof. Sharma is also a member of various national and international bodies that include Indian Society for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, Indian Water Works Association and Indian Society of Technical Education.
Prof. Sharma’s appointment as the Director-cum-Principal of Jawaharlal Nehru Govt. Engineering College at Sundernagar in Feb. 2012 brought about several qualitative changes in the campus. Besides ensuring a more disciplined, academically active and creatively inspiring ambience for studies and research, he provided the much needed thrust to other activities also. Introduction of e-governance and the ambitious plans to build state of art facilities for academics and research are expected to catapult the college to the forefront of higher education institutions in the country.
By virtue of working in the academic arena for a considerable number of years, visionary outlook, outstanding leadership and dedication to excellence helped him to become the Vice-Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh Technical University, Hamirpur in May 2014. His dreams, vision, mission and actions are currently focused to transform Himachal Pradesh Technical University to the status of a world class University in the area of Science and Technology.
